A Familiar Yet Fresh Narrative

At first glance, the initial sequences of Bhooth Bangla might give a fleeting impression of borrowing from Rajkumar Kohli’s 1979 hit Jaani Dushman, particularly with the premise of newly-wed brides being targeted. However, these similarities are superficial and quickly dissipate as Bhooth Bangla carves its own path. The film masterfully blends horror and comedy across its 2.45-hour runtime. The first half leans heavily into humour, setting a lighthearted tone, while the post-interval portions delve into a darker, more intricate past, adding depth to the narrative. The backstory in the second half evokes memories of Bhool Bhulaiyaa.

Priyadarshan’s Engaging Direction

Priyadarshan, a director renowned for his impeccable comic timing, ensures that the narrative of Bhooth Bangla remains engaging throughout. He keeps audiences hooked, springing surprises at regular intervals, with the interval twist delivering a major, unexpected jolt. While the humour largely works, a few sequences may come across as slightly naughty. The eerie atmosphere forms the backbone of the film, greatly enhanced by attention-grabbing VFX that boosts its visual appeal. However, even a veteran like Priyadarshan faces minor critiques; the writing for Bhooth Bangla could have been sharper, and the overall runtime could have been tighter for a more concise experience. The onscreen presentation of the backstory could also have benefited from a simpler approach.

Stellar Performances Elevate Bhooth Bangla

The cast of Bhooth Bangla is a significant strength, with Akshay Kumar leading the charge in top form. His comic timing, expressive face, and effortless transitions between fear and humour are an absolute delight to witness.

While Tabu is effective in her role, an actress of her immense calibre deserved more power-packed moments to truly shine. Similarly, Wamiqa Gabbi and Mithila Palkar have limited screen time and barely get any scope to make a substantial impact.

It’s the dynamic duo of Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav who steal many scenes, delivering several laugh-out-loud moments with their exceptional performances – both excel. The late Asrani also leaves a memorable mark. Bhavna Pani is too good, while Jisshu Sengupta, Zakir Hussain, and Rajesh Sharma deliver competent performances as always. Unfortunately, Manoj Joshi is largely wasted in his role.

Bhooth Bangla ultimately delivers on its promise. It’s an entertainer that works for most parts, offering a fair share of eerie chills combined with genuinely funny moments. For those looking for a film that successfully marries horror and comedy, Bhooth Bangla is definitely worth a watch.
