RR Dominating Win Over MI: After a prolonged rain delay threatened to wash out the contest, the Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians finally took to the field in Guwahati for a truncated 11-overs-a-side encounter in IPL 2026. What followed was a spectacle of power-hitting from the Royals’ openers, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who set the stage for a commanding 27-run victory over Mumbai Indians.
The match, which eventually began at 10:10 PM local time after more than two-and-a-half hours of waiting, saw Rajasthan Royals post a formidable 150 for 3, before restricting Mumbai Indians to 123 for 9. This win marks RR’s third consecutive victory, propelling them to the top of the points table, while MI suffered their second successive defeat.
Rain Relents, Royals Unleash a Storm
Persistent rain and a wet outfield had twice threatened to abandon the highly anticipated clash at the Barsapara Stadium. However, as the weather cleared around 9 PM, the stage was set for a thrilling, albeit shortened, contest. Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bowl first, a decision that soon appeared to backfire spectacularly.
Jaiswal, Sooryavanshi Blaze Sets Up Mammoth Total: RR Dominating Win Over MI
Opening the innings for Rajasthan, the left-handed duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal and young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi came out with aggressive intent, wasting no time in taking on the MI bowling attack. They launched a blistering assault, adding 80 runs for the first wicket in just 4.6 overs, laying an unshakeable foundation for RR’s high total.
Sooryavanshi was particularly brutal, smashing 39 runs off a mere 14 deliveries, an innings decorated with one four and five towering sixes, notably dispatching star pacer Jasprit Bumrah for a couple of maximums. His explosive cameo ended when Shardul Thakur eventually dismissed him. Dhruv Jurel departed cheaply for 2, falling to Allah Ghazanfar, who also claimed the wicket of skipper Riyan Parag (20 off 10 balls).
Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his relentless assault, accelerating towards his fifty and beyond. He remained unbeaten on a scintillating 77 runs off just 32 balls, an innings that propelled him past DC’s Sameer Rizvi to claim the Orange Cap as the season’s leading run-scorer. West Indies power-hitter Shimron Hetmyer joined him in the middle, staying not out on 6 from 7 deliveries as RR finished with an imposing 150 for 3 in their allotted 11 overs.
Mumbai Indians’ Chase Crumbles Under RR Bowling Attack: RR Dominating Win Over MI
Chasing a daunting 151 in 11 overs, Mumbai Indians’ innings got off to a disastrous start. The Royals’ bowlers terrorised MI’s top-order, picking up three crucial wickets inside the reduced 3.2-over powerplay. Jofra Archer removed Ryan Rickelton, Sandeep Sharma accounted for Rohit Sharma, and Nandre Burger dismissed Suryakumar Yadav, leaving the five-time champions reeling at 22 for 3.
Brief Respite, Then Collapse: RR Dominating Win Over MI
Things worsened for MI as Hardik Pandya and Tilak Verma also fell early. A glimmer of hope emerged with a brief stand between Naman Dhir and Sherfane Rutherford, who both scored 25 runs apiece to keep the scoreboard ticking. Rutherford, after being dropped early, provided a much-needed spark, hitting a four and two sixes off Tushar Deshpande to inject some life into the chase. However, his fiery innings was cut short by a brilliant diving catch from Sandeep Sharma at short third, off a slower ball from Deshpande.
With Rutherford’s departure, MI’s hopes faded. Shardul Thakur fell to Sandeep Sharma for his second wicket, and Trent Boult was run out by Archer. Rajasthan Royals’ bowlers maintained their stranglehold, with Sandeep Sharma, Nandre Burger, and Ravi Bishnoi all picking up two wickets each, restricting Mumbai Indians to 123 for 9 in their 11 overs.
RR Soar to Top, MI Seek Answers: RR Dominating Win Over MI
The comprehensive 27-run victory solidified Rajasthan Royals’ position as an early tournament favourite, moving them to the summit of the IPL 2026 points table with three wins from three games and an impressive Net Run Rate of 2.403. Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, will need to regroup quickly after their second successive loss, finding themselves in seventh place.
The individual performances of Jaiswal and Sooryavanshi were pivotal, but the collective bowling effort ensured MI never got a foothold in the chase. Post-match, Yashasvi Jaiswal now leads the Orange Cap race with 170 runs in 3 matches, while RR’s Ravi Bishnoi holds the Purple Cap with 7 wickets from 3 games, followed closely by teammate Nandre Burger with 5 wickets.

Rutherford is silenced

MI needed some sort of spark and Sherfane Rutherford provided them with one. After being dropped first ball, he lifts off. Naman Dhir smacks Sandeep for a four and six before Rutherford ends Bishnoi’s second over with back-to-back fours – one past backward point and one over cover. Rutherford then lines up Deshpande. With the required rate soaring to 19 an over, he dumps Deshpande for a four and two sixes to inject some life into the game.
But his innings is cut short courtesy of a remarkable catch by Sandeep at short third. It was a slower hard length ball outside off, Rutherford slashes at it, gets a thick outside edge and Sandeep dives forward to take a catch millimetres off the ground. Rutherford goes and with him, MI’s hopes.
Bishnoi has two in an over

He is the purple cap holder for a reason and Bishnoi starts off with two wickets in one over. Hardik smokes Bishnoi through covers first ball, but then thumps Bishnoi flat and hard and straight to long-on. Tilak Varma then pulls a short ball through midwicket but falls the very next ball. It was a wrong’un that Tilak lines up for a slog sweep. But he doesn’t get it anywhere in the middle and Hetmyer takes a simple catch at deep midwicket.
MI slip to 46 for 5 after five overs. Bishnoi should have had a third wicket with Sherfane Rutherford, the Impact Player, toe-ending the legspinner straight up towards Jaiswal at long-off. He runs in, reaches there in time but shells a straightforward chance.
Sandeep wins the Rohit battle again
Coming into this game, Sandeep had dismissed Rohit Sharma five times in 12 innings in the IPL. That becomes six in 13 with Rohit pinned bang in front of the wickets as MI continue to slide. With the wicketkeeper up to the stumps, Sandeep begins with two dot balls. Rohit, under pressure, then looks for an adventurous shot. He goes right across eyeing a fine paddle. But Sandeep keeps calm and nails a yorker on middle. Rohit misses, is struck on middle and that is PLUMB! Rohit reviews more in hope than anything else and the ball tracker has that thumping into middle of middle. A top over from Sandeep, going for three runs!
MI finish the powerplay on 30 for 3, with the target looking a loooong way away.
SKY falls!
Oof, Nandre Burger is pumped up and lets Suryakumar Yadav know. He walks in at No. 3 and paddles the flattest of sixes down to the fine leg fence. But Burger strikes back almost immediately. It’s the change of pace that deceives Suryakumar, who swipes the length on middle and leg straight to Archer at deep backward square leg.
