The revelations from the “Epstein files” have prompted a forceful call for Epstein Files Accountability from United Nations Human Rights Council-appointed experts. These independent experts are demanding a full and transparent investigation into the grave trafficking allegations, while also issuing a stark warning about the “continuing violence of patriarchal power systems” brought to light by the documents.

The massive collection of documents, photos, flight logs, and other materials linked to investigations into the activities of deceased New York-based financier and convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein began being released by the US Department of Justice late last year. These files have since ignited significant legal and political debate across Washington DC and globally.

Call for a Transparent Investigation
“We are gravely concerned by the credible allegations in the ‘Epstein files’ of systemic trafficking of young women and girls for purposes of sexual exploitation and call for a full and transparent investigation,” stated Siobhán Mullally, Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, especially women and children, and the five members of the Working Group on discrimination against women and girls.
The allegations are far-reaching, implicating senior politicians, prominent public figures, diplomats, global business leaders, and leading academics. They detail the widespread trafficking of girls and young women across multiple international borders, a horrific practice spanning decades. The experts emphasized that the trafficking of children and young women constitutes a serious criminal offence and a grave violation of human rights.

Patriarchal Systems and a Culture of Impunity
The situation highlighted by the Epstein files underscores deeply entrenched discrimination and the pervasive violence inherent in patriarchal systems of power, which have led to profound failures of accountability. The experts voiced deep concern over what they described as the “wholly inadequate” response by national governments and law enforcement authorities to these allegations.
“The failure to ensure accountability perpetuates a culture of impunity that disproportionately harms women and girls and undermines the promise of equal protection under international human rights law,” the independent experts’ statement declared. They further stressed that the trafficking of children for sexual exploitation not only destroys childhoods but also inflicts devastating long-term consequences on victims. This lack of Epstein Files Accountability is a critical concern.

Upholding Government Obligations and Victim Support
Governments have a clear obligation under international law to prevent trafficking, protect victims, and ensure access to justice and effective remedies, including compensation. The experts reiterated this duty, urging states to act decisively.
“Victims and survivors must be at the centre of effective trauma-informed and gender-sensitive responses to trafficking in persons,” the statement emphasized. This includes guaranteeing essential medical assistance, encompassing reproductive and sexual health services, psychosocial support, and long-term social inclusion and recovery measures to help survivors rebuild their lives.
Action Is “Long Overdue”
Despite global attention around the case potentially waning, the experts called for concrete action, robust Epstein Files Accountability, and urgent measures to ensure access to justice. They also demanded reparations for victims, guarantees of non-repetition, and complete transparency in all investigations.
“States bear the obligation to act, and that obligation is long overdue,” they concluded, reinforcing the urgent need for comprehensive action.
