Suspension of Defence Pact Confirmed
Prime Minister Meloni’s Statement
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni articulated the government’s decision on the sidelines of an event in Verona, stating, “In view of the current situation, the government has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defence agreement with Israel.” Her remarks, reported by Italian news agencies ANSA and AGI, were further corroborated by an Italian diplomatic source who confirmed the suspension to AFP, noting that “It would have been politically difficult to keep it going.”

The 2006 Agreement
The defence agreement, initially approved by Israel in 2006, is subject to review every five years. It outlines a broad scope of cooperation, including defence industries, education and training for military personnel, joint research and development initiatives, and information technology exchanges. The pact has been a cornerstone of military and technological collaboration between the two nations.
Escalating Diplomatic Strain
The suspension comes in the wake of heightened tensions between Italy and Israel over the past week, stemming from a series of incidents and diplomatic exchanges.
Incident with UN Peacekeepers
A key flashpoint occurred when the Italian government accused Israeli forces of firing warning shots at a convoy of Italian UN peacekeepers stationed in Lebanon. The incident reportedly resulted in damage to at least one vehicle, though no injuries were reported among the Italian personnel.
Diplomatic Repercussions
In response to the alleged firing incident, Italy promptly summoned Israel’s ambassador to protest the actions of the Israeli forces. This diplomatic move underscored Italy’s serious concerns regarding the safety of its peacekeepers and the conduct of Israeli forces in the region.

Reciprocal Summoning and Ministerial Condemnation
The diplomatic friction escalated further when Israel, in turn, summoned Italy’s ambassador. This followed comments made by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who condemned what he described as “unacceptable attacks” on Lebanese civilians by Israeli forces. Tajani, who also serves as deputy prime minister, was in Beirut on Monday for discussions with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi. He later reiterated his stance on X (formerly Twitter), stating his visit was to “convey Italy’s solidarity following Israel’s unacceptable attacks against the civilian population.”
