Chinese Tanker Defies Trump’s Hormuz Blockade, Escalating Tensions

A US-sanctioned tanker linked to China successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, becoming one of the first vessels to navigate the critical energy chokepoint after the US military initiated a blockade of Iran’s ports. This bold move by a China-linked ship, despite threats from the Trump administration, provided Iran with an immediate opportunity to criticize the US, suggesting the blockade only applied to countries “Trump isn’t afraid of.”

Chinese Tanker Defies US Blockade in Hormuz

Maritime traffic data revealed that the Rich Starry, a medium-range tanker, is now in the Gulf of Oman after its successful transit through Hormuz. The vessel, sailing under the flag of Malawi (a landlocked nation), had initially turned back on Monday as the blockade commenced, according to a Bloomberg report. However, it later resumed its voyage through Hormuz after broadcasting that it carried a Chinese crew. Its successful passage marked the first significant challenge for the US Navy in enforcing its newly declared blockade.

The Blockade’s Context and Ambiguity

The incident unfolded shortly after President Trump announced that the US Navy would begin blocking ships entering or leaving Iranian ports, a decision made after peace talks between Washington and Tehran in Pakistan collapsed. However, the US had clarified that ships utilizing non-Iranian ports would not be subject to the blockade. Consequently, it remains unclear whether the Chinese tanker had visited any Iranian ports prior to its transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

Sanctioned Vessel, Loaded Cargo

Data indicates that the Rich Starry is owned by Shanghai Xuanrun Shipping Co Ltd. Both the owner and the vessel itself were blacklisted by the US approximately two years ago for their alleged role in helping Iran circumvent energy sanctions. The tanker was carrying an estimated 250,000 barrels of methanol, having loaded its cargo at the UAE’s Hamriyah port, according to the available data.

Iran Taunts US, China Expresses Outrage

The incident provided Iran with fresh ammunition for a sarcastic jab at the Trump administration. “The US Navy, with its many ‘big beautiful ships,’ issued repeated warnings. Reportedly, the tanker’s captain upgraded to premium to skip the ads,” the Iranian embassy in Ghana tweeted, mocking the US stance.

Wider Implications and China’s Stance

Beyond the Rich Starry, two other vessels—the Panama-flagged Peace Gulf and Murlikishan—also passed through the vital oil chokepoint on Tuesday. While the Peace Gulf was reportedly heading to Hamriyah port, Murlikishan, also a sanctioned vessel, made its way towards Iraq, having previously transported Russian and Iranian oil.

Experts have underscored that Trump’s decision to block Hormuz significantly heightens the risk of confrontations with major oil-importing nations, particularly China. The numbers highlight Hormuz’s immense significance for China, the world’s largest crude importer. Approximately 38% of the oil and 25% of the LNG typically passing through Hormuz is destined for China, accounting for roughly half of China’s seaborne oil supply. As the primary importer of Iranian oil, China stands to be the most impacted by Trump’s recent actions.

This situation prompted China to issue its most forceful criticism yet of Washington amidst the escalating tensions with Iran. Beijing labeled the blockade “dangerous and irresponsible,” asserting that the world must not be allowed to “revert to the law of the jungle.”

Geopolitical Tensions Escalating

The incident is likely to have a significant bearing as President Trump prepares for his much-anticipated visit to Beijing next month for a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The tanker’s passage comes amid a broader slugfest between the two global superpowers, especially after US intelligence suggested that China was preparing to arm Iran with air defense systems within the next few weeks. Earlier this week, Trump had warned that any support from Beijing to Tehran was being closely watched, and he has also threatened 50% tariffs on any country supplying Iran with weapons.
